Are you ‘dreaming of a white Chrsitmas’ . Well this year we had one. We spent a few days in Hakuba (where the winter olympics were held once). It was awesome. Once again the beauty of Japan was displayed. Towering alps and snowboarding in God’s winter wonderland …. just awseome!
Japan has no public holiday for Christmas (or any other christian festival). It seems strange to see people going to work long 16 hour days on Christmas and Boxing Day. There are santas and christimas trees everywhere, shopping and present giving too ….. but absolutely no understanding that this was a celebration of Jesus’ birthday. Japanese are shocked to find out that Jesus’ birthdate set the world year clock at zero, and ‘2008′ means ‘2008 years after Jesus birth’!
So what is the result of asking Japanese who have never heard of Jesus to come to church for Christmas? The answer is ‘the largest christmas services we’ve ever had in Japan’. Over the christmas week we had about 1,000 in church over 4 services. Among these were about 300 who came to church for the first time in their life!

Osaka church, now 8 months old, had over 100 poeple for the first time. 40 of these also had never been to church before!
So we celebrate Christmas with both christians and non-christians enthusiastically singing and enjoying the festivities. Christmas is fun in Japan!!!
Another Study of young Japanese attitiudes towards God

Osaka church recently had a great visiting team from ShireLive Church in Sydney. One of their goals was to interview young Japanese who had never heard the Gospel. They asked ’Do you believe in God?’ and ’Is God good or bad’?
100 responses were recorded. About 95 % of respondents said ‘they believed in God and he is probably good’ . They also said they would be ‘open to knowing more about him.’
Previously another 100 Japanese were asked the same questions …. with the same results. That means that out of 200 researched, about 190 said they were open to knowing more about God!
This would definately be a way better result than Australia, America and other nations.
Young Japanese are open right now. We have just baptised almost 30 in Tokyo, and Osaka has a baptism tomorrow where many will also be baptised
The only problem we face in Japan …. there are so few people are telling them the good news of Jesus. We need more workers desparately right now in Japan.
Francis Xavier, Jesuit priest to Japan in the 1500’s said ‘Give up your small ambitions and come and save the world’.

We used to live in Thailand from 1990 till 1994. In fact we love the Thai people dearly. Our first son Monty was born there, and we help start a village Bible School and started 13 village churches.
私と妻は1990年から1994年までにタイに住んでいた。私達はタイの人々を心から愛している。長男のモンティはタイで生まれて、村に聖書学校を立ち上げるのを助け、１３もの村の教会を立てあげた。
So it was a joyful experience to return there last week as a guest for ministry. I was with Peter DeWit, pastor of New Song Church, Bangkok. THis is a new-gen church aimed at reaching foreigners and Thais in Bangkok. (Hey, really loved being with you and the church Peter!)
その過去があったため、先週ミニストリーでゲストとしてタイに行くのは素晴らしい体験だった。 私はバンコクのニューソング・チャーチのピーター・デウィットと一緒に過ごした。ニューソング・チャーチは次世代の教会でバンコクにいるタイ人と外国人に伝えるのが目的だ。（ピーターと教会の皆と楽しい時間をすごせてよかったよ！）
Bangkok uni studesnts
Thailand has changed a lot, along with most nations in Asia. Bangkok has become a modern world city, with new subways, sky-trains, new world-class buildings and a large educated youth population.
タイは他のアジア諸国と同様、もの凄く変化した。
バンコクは近代的な街になり、新しい地下鉄や空中列車、ワールドクラスの建物や教育を受けた若者がたくさんいた。
It is another reminder how ‘flat’ the world has become. This is another word for globalization of the world’s technologies, arts, education and expectations for life. There is a ‘world youth culture’ that is emerging breath-takingly fast.
どれぐらい世界が「平ら」になったのか気づかされる。 世界の技術、芸術、教育や人生にたいする期待のグローバライゼーション化が起きている。「世界中の若者のカルチャー」が非常に早く進んでいる。
This ‘flattening’ of the world’s youth culture is a big reason why we as Australians can pastor in Japan, or a Canadian (Peter DeWit) can pastor in Thailand, or Gordon Lee, (my Hong Kong friend) can pastor in Sydney or Mark WIlkinson (an Aussie friend) can launch a church successfully in Berlin. It is a new world with new opportunities.
この世界中の若者のカルチャーが「平ら」になってきている結果、オーストラリア人が日本で牧会をしたり、カナダ人（ピーター・でウィット）がタイで牧会をしたり、ゴードン・リー（私の香港人の友達）がシドニーで、マーク・ウィルキンソン（オーストラリア人の友達）がベルリンで教会をはじめ、成功することができている。今すんでる世界はたくさんの機会が与えられている新しい世界だ。
I loved being in Thailand again. The poeple, the culture … and of course the world’s best food. It was fun. It was challenging. BUt it is another reminder how quickly the world is changing.
再びタイに行けて、凄く楽しめた。人々、文化・・・もちろん世界で一番の食事。凄く楽しかった。チャレンジもたくさんあった。しかし、世界がどれだけ早く変化していってるのかを気づかされるものだった。
The world is 'flat'
Hey … we can all play a part in this amazing world. Maybe God will use some of you to do outrageous things in the nations too. As it says in (Psalm 2:8) ’Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.’ or in the (Message Bible) ‘What do you want? Name it: Nations as a present? Continents as a prize?’
私たちはこの最高の世界で何かの一部になることができる。神様が世界で素晴らしいことをするためにあなたに使命を与えるかもしれない。（詩篇２：８）わたしに願い出よ。そうすれば、世界中の国々を授けよう。」または、メッセージバイブル訳では、「何がほしい？いいなさい？国をプレゼントされたい？それとも大陸がほしい？」
New-Generation Japanese are ‘Seeking’ Jesus 新しい世代の日本人はイエスを「求めてる」
Japanese - The new generation are different
I’ve noticed two key Bible passages that new Japanese believers are often quoting that impacted their lives when seeking after God. These are:- (Mat 6:33-34) and (Mat 7:7-8)
日本人のクリスチャンが神様を求めている時、次の２つの聖書箇所に影響を与えられるということに気がついた。 それは（マタイ６：３３−３４）と（マタイ７：７−８）。
(Mat 6:33-34) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (34) Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
（マタイ６：３３−３４） だから神の国とその義とをまず第一に求めなさい。そうすれば、そんれに加えて、れこらのものはすべて与えられます。（３４）だから、あすのための心配は無用です。あすのことはあすが心配します。労苦はその日その日に十分あります。
(Mat 7:7-8) “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (8) For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
（マタイ７：７−８） 「求めなさい。そうすれば与えられます。 捜しなさい。そうすれば見つかります。たたきなさい。そうすれば開かれます。（８）だれであれ、求めるものは受け、捜すものは見つけ出し、たたくものは開かれます。
Both verses are talking about seeking after God.
これら二つの箇所は神様を求めることについて書いてある。
Japanese youth are asking 'Who am I?'
Many young Japanese are on a search right now. One of our studies in Osaka asked 50 young Japanese non-christians ‘Do you believe in God?’ Out of 50 people questioned. Pastor Luke Kennedy said about 95 % said ‘they believe in god and want to have a relationship with him if he is good’ ( and most thought of him as good!).
今、たくさんの若い日本人が求めている。大阪のある調査が50人の日本人のノンクリスチャンに次の質問をした。 「神様を信じていますか？」 質問に答えた50人のうち、ルークケネディ牧師によると９５％が「神様を信じているし、神様が良い神様なら関係を築きたい」と答えたそう！（しかも大半が神様は良い神様だと信じているらしい！）
Wow … young Japanese are open to God in a way maybe not seen in the the last generation. This is a generational shift! It’s why we came to Japan. It’s a pity some christian leaders are still saying Japanese are hard to the Gospel. It’s just not true of the youth generation.
ワオ！ 若い日本人は前の世代よりも神様に対して心を開いている！世代が変わってきたということだ！だから、私たちは日本に来た。 まだ日本は福音に対して心を閉ざしているという風に言っているクリスチャンリーダーがいるのは非常に残念だ。今の日本の若者の世代は心を閉ざしてなんかいない。
We have seen about 25 decisions for Jesus in the last month in Tokyo and about 10 in Osaka. That is amazing. The churches are flourishing and filled with young Japanese.
先月、東京では25人がイエスを受け入れ、大阪では10人だった。 これはすばらしい！ 教会は成長していて、若い日本人でいっぱいだ。

Shall we believe a negative or a positive report? ネガティブな報告とポジティブな報告、どれを信じたらいい？

When we arrived in Japan 2002, we were amazed at the negative things people spoke about Japan especially in the area of church life. For example we were told by some people:-
2002年に日本に来たとき、多くの人達が日本に対してネガティブな話をしているのに驚いた。特に教会の分野に関して。例えばある人々はこういうことを言った。
‘Japan is tough’, ‘Japanese are hardened to the Gospel’, ‘Don’t expect much fruit here in Japan’ etc.
「日本は厳しい」「日本人は福音に対して心を閉ざしている。」「日本で実がなることは期待しないほうがいい。」
But a good report is ‘God is moving in Japan’.God had spoken to us directly saying the following:- This is the time for the next generation in Japan, it’s coming soon, many will become christians etc
しかし、良い報告は「神様は日本で働いている」 神様は私たちに直接次のことを語ってくれた。「今が日本の次世代が立ち上がる時だ。それはじきにやってくる。多くの若者がクリスチャンになる。」
Now who do we believe? A negative report or God’s Positive Report?I think I’ll believe God who says in His Word.
どちらを信じるのか。 ネガティブな報告か神様の良い報告か。この言葉を語っている神様を信じている。
(Luke 1:37) For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 18:27) Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
(ルカ 1:37 ）神にとって不可能なことは一つもありません。（ルカ 18:27） イエスは言われた。「人にはできないことが、神にはできるのです。」
Our first year in Japan was indeed difficult. There have been challenging times since then too. But we were able to maintain a positive report among our young team, and kept a spirit of faith among the negative reports.
日本1年目は非常に厳しかった。その後も大変な時期はあった。それでも、若いチームに対してポジティブな報告をすることができたし、ネガティブな報告の中でも信仰を持つ精神を保つことができた。
And the results have been awesome. The church has grown from 16 people to 700 in six and a half years
そして、その結果は素晴らしいものだ。教会は6年半で16人から700人に成長した。

Japan - so few christians! 日本-クリスチャンが少ない！
Japan - has .21% (21 per 10,000 people) christians that attend church. This means that out of 127,000,000 people in the nation, only 266,000 go to church. There are about 7,700 churches in Japan so the average size church on a Sunday is 34 people.
日本-教会に通っているクリスチャンは０．２１％ （10,000人中の21) これは、人口127,000,000人の中で266,000人だけしか教会に通っていないことになる。日本では7,700の教会しかないので、日曜日の教会で集まる平均人数は34人ということになる。
Japan's youth - who reach reach out to them?
Now … as the overwhelming majority of these christians are over 60 years old, very, very few churches are reaching the next generation at all. Even though Japanese people live to a ripe old age, this means the size of the church in Japan is actually going backwards.
今の時代では、このクリスチャンの大半が60歳以上の人達がほとんど。次世代に伝えている教会は本当に極極極まれだ。日本人が長生きするといっても、日本の教会の数は減っていく。
One denomination has 200 churches, almost all have their own church building. About half have less than 10 members. 100 of the pastors are over 70 and wanting to retire. This story is repeated all over the country.
ある宗派は２００ぐらいの教会があり、自分達の教会の建物を所有している。その半数は10人以下しか集まらない。何百人もの牧師が70歳以上で、牧会をやめたいと思っている。このような話はこの国で繰り返し耳にする。
We applaud the churches caring and blessing the older generation. We actually cannot do that very effectively at Jesus Lifehouse.
私たちは年配の世代をケアして祝福している教会を尊敬する。ジーザスライフハウスでは同じようにその世代に影響を与えることは難しい。
But we desparately need 1,000 more churches - of any description - right now - to reach the youth generation of Japan.
しかし、今日本の若者の世代に伝えていく教会が１０００以上は必要だ。
A Ripe Harvest in Japan
Come on - let’s pray the Lord of the harvest to send out more labourers to reach this generation who have never heard of Jesus, nor have ever seen a Bible, nor have ever had a friend who was a christian. Many middle and high schools do not have a single christian!!!
立ち上がろう！働き手を増やして、イエスのことを聞いたことがない人、聖書を見たことがない人、クリスチャンの友達がいたことがないこの世代の人達につたえていけるように収穫の神様に祈ろう！クリスチャンが一人もいない中学校や高校がたくさんある。
This is an incredible moment of opportunity in Japan’s history to share the Good News of Jesus with a whole new generation. Let’s not miss this opportunity.
日本の歴史の中で今が次世代にイエスの最高の知らせを伝える最高のチャンス。 このチャンスを逃さないようにしよう。
Suicides - 30,000 a Year in Japan! 自殺- 日本では年間3万人！

新しい方法としては、家庭用洗剤を混ぜて毒入りの混合物をつくり、煙を吸った人は全員死んでしまうというものもあるらしい。これが起きた時は、ビル中の人々が避難しないといけない。
チームの多くの人々は自殺や自殺後の様子を目撃したことがある。私の息子モンティは14歳の時にかなり近くで目撃してしまった。その夜彼が帰ってきたときは震えていて、動揺していた。私たちは一緒に祈った。彼は若者がそんなに早く、公共の場で命を絶ってしまうことに対してショックを受けていた。

この記憶が頭から離れない。
これが日本に対して使命が与えられると確信しているもう一つの例です。 日本人の若者が立ち上がって、傷ついている周りの人々が答えを見つけるのを助けられるように育てていきたい。
Why We Came To Japan (Part 2) 日本にきた理由（パート２）
The church we were leading in Toowoomba up till 2001 had seen great growth and the team was strong. Life was good
2001年まで牧会していたトゥンバのチャーチは成長し、チームは強かった。最高な人生だった！
… Yet something was changing and I didn’t understand what. I felt torn ? at the same time loving the church, but realizing that a radical change was on the way..
しかし、何かが変わってきていて、自分ではそれが何なのかはわからなかった。引き裂かれる思いだった。教会を愛していたが、何か大きな変化が待っていると・・・
Then Viv had a strange vision. It was going to launch us into an entirely different direction. It is still the source of strength to us today.
そこからヴィヴは不思議なビジョンをみた。私たちを全く違う方向に向かわせるものだった。そのビジョンは今でもわたしたちの力となっている。
Waves shows the beauty and Power of God
She saw a gigantic wave approaching her with power. She knew it was a God-given vision, but there was no context for it. She felt fear as this large wave was about to hit and overpower her. Then she heard God’s voice say ‘Don’t be afraid, It is me. This is coming soon. It will bring great blessing to many’. Then in the vision, the wave actually hit her. Instead of bringing destruction, God’s wave brought exhilaration. She was carried along on the front of this huge breaking wave just like a skilled surfer.
彼女は力強い巨大な波が自分にむかってくるのが見えた。神様からのビジョンだということは知っていたが、どういう意味なのかはその時はわからなかった。彼女はこの巨大な波が彼女を飲み込んでしまうのではないかと恐れた。しかし、そこで神様の言葉を聞いた。「恐れるな。私だ。これはすぐに起こることだ。そして多くの人々を祝福する。」そしてビジョンの中でその波が彼女を飲み込んだ。しかし彼女を破壊するのではなく、興奮をもたらした。プロサーファーのように彼女はこの巨大な波の上にのっかっていた。
She shared this vision of God’s ‘tsunami wave’ with me. She was actually quite shaken by the experience. She is not used to having such dreams or visions in her life, and this was huge!
彼女はこの「神様の津波」のビジョンを私に説明してきた。彼女はこの経験によって心が動かされていた。彼女は夢やビジョンを見ないタイプだったので、この出来事は大きかった！
We didn’t understand it. We just ‘left it on the shelf’. Well, at least I did. Until … I was asked by some key pastors in Australia to lead a team of young Aussies to Japan. Viv was not interested at first. In fact she thought ‘If they feel so strongly about Japan, why don’t they go themselves?’ Then God spoke into her heart ‘But what if I called you to go to Japan ? would you go?’
そのビジョンが何を表していたのか理解できなかった。しばらく放置していた。まあ、どちらかというと私のほうが放置していた。しかし、オーストラリアの牧師達からオーストラリアの若者達のチームと一緒に日本で教会を建てないかと言われるまでは。ヴィヴは最初興味を示してなかった。どちらかというと、「何故彼らがこれほどまで日本に対して強い想いがあるのなら自分でいかないの？」と思っていた。その時、神様が彼女の心に語った。「もし私があなたに日本に行きなさいといっていたら、あなたはいきますか？」
Ride God's Wave with Joy
It was at this point that she had the ‘tsunami wave vision all over again. Yes … a second time. Just as powerful, just as impacting. She came and told me ‘I had that ‘tsunami’ wave vision again. I said ‘do you know that ‘tsunami’ is a Japanese word?’ She said ‘Yes of course I know that’ . It then dawned on both us … maybe the vision of God’s Tsunami Wave and the call to go to Japan are one and the same thing’.
この時点で、彼女は再び津波のビジョンをみた。2度目だった。同じぐらい衝撃的で影響力のあるものだった。彼女は私の元にきて、「またあの津波のビジョンを見たの。」といってきた。私は彼女に「津波って日本語だって知ってる？」と聞いた。彼女は「もちろん、知ってるわ。」と応えた。もしかしたら、神様の津波のビジョンと日本にいくように言われているのは同じかもしれない！
We felt God was saying ‘I am going to move in Japan. It’s going to be big and powerful, like a wave of blessing and joy flowing over Japan …. Would you like to be a part of it?’Viv and I both felt the exhilaration as we said ‘Yes … we want to be a part of it’.
神様から「私はこれから日本で働きを見せる。大きくてパワフルなものになる。日本は祝福と喜びの波で覆われる。その一部になりたいか？」
ヴィヴと私は同じように興奮し、「はい。一部になりたいです！」と答えた。
Well —the ride of faith to go into Japan had only just begun. How was it going to happen?? (Come back later for the next part).
というわけで・・・信仰の波に乗って日本にきた。それはただの始まりにしか過ぎない。 どのようにして実現したのか？

Why We Came to Japan (Part 1) 日本にきた理由（パート１）

Viv and I have always had a heart to reach out to people that had never heard the wonderful news of Jesus. We both became christians through the witness of friends in our teenage years in Australia. . Viv was 16 years old at that time and I was 19.
ヴィヴと私はいつもイエスのことを聞いたことがない人に伝えたいという想いがあった。私たち2人は友達を通して十代の頃にオーストラリアでクリスチャンになった。ヴィヴは当時１６で私は１９だった。
Before coming to Japan we had previously led churches over 15 years in both Australia and Thailand, and our churches were always full of young people. Many of these were new christians. It has always been our joy to reach out to people who did not have a christian background.
日本に来る前に15年間の間オーストラリアとタイで牧会をしていた。私たちの教会はいつも若者でいっぱいだった。彼らのほとんどが新しいクリスチャン。クリスチャンの知識がない人達に伝えることにいつも喜びを感じていた。
From 1994 till 2001 we pastored in the city of Toowoomba, near Brisbane, Australia. The church had grown in a major way and we had planted several regional churches nearby. God had given us a great team around us and we were loving the church. Then …. in 2000 something strange started to happen in my heart.
Suddenly I felt as though a major change was going to happen. I sought the Lord for direction. I went on a partial fast for 40 days (eating just an evening meal every day). I lost lots of weight, but really didn’t get what God was saying.
1994年から2001年にオーストラリアのブリスベンの近くにあるトゥンバという街の教会で牧会をしていた。教会は大きく成長し、近くにいくつかの地域教会をたてた。神様は私たちに最高のチームを与えてくれて、私たちは教会を愛していた。しかし2000年に何か私の心の中で不思議な変化があった。何か大きな変化が起こることを予感した。神様に導いてもらうように頼んた。私は40日間、部分的な断食をした（毎日夕飯しか食べない断食）。 私の体重は落ちたが、神様が何を語っているのかがわからなかった。
Harajuku - Youth Hub
Viv and I decided to come to Japan on a holiday and have a look at this amazing nation. We loved our holiday in Japan. The people of Japan were great. So cute. So helpful.
ヴィヴと私は旅行で日本にきて、この素晴らしい国を見ることにした。日本での旅行は最高だった。日本人は最高！ とてもキュートで、親切で・・・。
But that wasn’t the call to come here.
しかし、それだけで日本にくるように呼ばれている確信はなかった。
Then we started to realize that Japanese had never heard the Good News of Jesus. Never! We saw the thousands upon thousands of young Japanese at Harajuku and Shibuya in Tokyo, and Namba in Osaka. We saw the need to help this new generation of Japanese who appeared like the sheep Jesus spoke about “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Mat 9:36)
しかし、しばらくして日本人はイエスの素晴らしい知らせを聞いたことがないことに気がついた。一度も！東京では原宿や渋谷、大阪では難波で何千人もの若い者を見た。 イエスが話していた羊のような次世代の日本人を助ける必要があるということに気がついた。「また、群衆を見て、羊飼いのない羊のように弱り果てて倒れている彼らをかわいそうに思われた。」 （ マタイ 9:36)
Then we started to become burdened for the people of Japan. Then one day God spoke to us clearly about His future plans for Japan. Viv was given a vision on two occasions and God also spoke to me through a vision.
それから日本人に対して重荷を抱くようになった。それからある日、神様がはっきりと日本に対する彼の計画について話してくれた。ヴィヴは２度ビジョンが与えられ、神様もビジョンを通して私に語った。
… And finally we concluded that we were called by God to come here.
そして、本当に神様から日本にくるように使命が与えられているという結論に達した。

Having a Great Wife - Part 2 - Asking Viv out for the first Time 私の最高の妻―パート２―最初にヴィヴをデートに誘った時
Sweet Couple eh!
1983−ようやく勇気を出して初めてヴィヴをデートに誘うことができた。彼女が「はい」というだろうという確信があった。だって・・・断る理由がないと思ってたから（笑）
しかし、3回目では近場のランチに誘うことにした。彼女は、「はい。よさそうですね。」と答えた。
But the lunch date was a disaster. She is from Argentina and I invited her to a Mexican restaurant. You know … give her something close to her national food, right? Wrong! Agentinain food in Italian style and never spicy. The Mexican food was too hot and she couldn’t eat it. Oh no. Would she go out with me again after that? ….
しかしランチデートは散々だった。彼女はアルゼンチン出身なのでメキシカンレストランに招待した。だって・・・彼女の文化に近い食べ物が良いと思ったから・・・そう思うのが普通じゃない？ でも、大間違いだった！アルゼンチンの食べ物はイタリアンと似ていて、辛くない。メキシカンは辛すぎて彼女は食べられなかった。やばい！次のデートはあるのだろうか・・・？
その後のことはご存知のとおり・・・！結婚してから23年たっている。（ちなみに、今彼女はメキシコ料理が大好き）。
